sinonimi e contrari

Come forse ricorderete, nel mio breve elenco di potentissimi shortcut parametrici per firefox, non compariva alcun dizionario dei sinonimi e dei contrari. Il fatto e' che il dizionario di virgilio (ormai diventato il dizionario di alice) usa il metodo post per effettuare la ricerca, mentre il dizionario di sapere.it non e' particolarmente ricco e utile.

Di fatto, mi serv(iv)o del sedicente sinonimi master, raggiungibile dalla sezione linguaggi di homo laicus. Di per se' si tratta di buon dizionario, almeno in termini di quantita' di voci e almeno per l'uso occasionale che ne faccio io. Gli svantaggi, pero', erano notevoli: il dizionario e' strutturato semplicemente come un insieme di pagine HTML (che si spartiscono i termini in ordine alfabetico) linkate fra di loro e "tenute insieme" in un frameset in cui compare solo un frame a mo' di indice alfabetico, senza nemmeno un form di ricerca...

Ma ecco, udite udite, lo shortcut parametrico di firefox per utilizzare questo altrimenti notevolissimo dizionario sinonimi/contrari a cui potrete associare la vostra keyword preferita:

Come avrete subito notato, il link non e' alle pagine di homolaicus, bensi' a google. All'inizio io stesso non facevo altro che cercare su google "sinonimi e contrari" (che per me significava semplicemente andare all'indirizzo g sinonimi e contrari...) per arrivare subito alla pagina principale del sinonimi-master e da li' passavo alla sezione alfabetica opportuna per il termine che cercavo. Il passo successivo, abbastanza naturale, era quello di inserire anche il termine che mi interessava, nella ricerca di google: g sinonimi e contrari affascinante, cosi' che gia' dal link di google sarei passato direttamente alla pagina alfabetica giusta. Del resto il link al sinonimi-master era quasi sempre il primo della lista di google. Se non avessi usato il mio shortcut parametrico di firefox e avessi effettuato la ricerca dalla homepage di google, avrei potuto benissimo affidarmi direttamente al tasto "mi sento fortunato"...

Ok, avete capito: riuscire ad accedere direttamente al "mi stento fortunato" di google tramite URL sarebbe stato scacco. Ma a quel punto risalire alla coppia chiave-valore btnI=I'm+Feeling+Lucky (e aggiungere al termine cercato, per sicurezza, la specifica site:www.homolaicus.com/linguaggi/sinonimi) e' stato questione di un attimo.

Ci sarebbe un ultimo neo, in tutto cio', ed e' il fatto che la pagina si apre in cima e non all'altezza della voce che cercate, la quale potrebbe trovarsi anche in fondo in fondo...

Se, come me, avete abilitata l'opzione Find As You Type (cercate accessibility.typeaheadfind in about:config), vi bastera' comunque cominciare a digitare il termine che cercate per posizionarvi velocemente all'altezza giusta della pagina...

L'idea di OiHoi Search era molto buona. Peccato per lui che Firefox mette gia' a disposizione shortcut parametrici per i bookmark.

L'idea di OiHoi e' quella di poter selezionare il tipo di ricerca, oltre a quel che si vuole cercare.

Vuoi cercare su google la parola hronir? Digita search: hronir, oppure find: hronir (oppure, in questo caso di default, semplicemente hronir). Ma se vuoi cercare nelle immagini? Semplice: digita images: hronir; oppure wiki: hronir se vuoi cercare nella wikipedia, oppure word: hronir se vuoi cercare la definizione nel dizionario, e cosi' via per le mille altre possibili keyword (no, in realta' non sono mille, non sono neanche 40).

Per chi, come me, tende a usare il meno possibile il mouse, questa rappresenta davvero una utilita' fantastica: basta selezionare OiHoi come motore predefinito per la search box di Firefox, e per fare una qualsiasi ricerca basta, usando rigorosamente solo la tastiera, premere Ctrl+K (per posizionare il focus sulla search box) e digitare la keyword giusta prima del termine da cercare.

Certo, ci sono dei piccoli fastidi: non puoi personalizzare le keyword (che spesso sono lunghe per essere delle shortcut...), non puoi aggiungere particolari ricerche (il dizionario di OiHoi, ad esempio, e' solo in inglese, ma anche per l'inglese io preferisco di gran lunga il mio caro thefreedictionary al suo dictionary.reference!)... ma non si puo' sempre avere tutto.

Ma a volte si'!

E non servono plug-in o add-on, basta semplicemente Firefox e i suoi bookmark.

Le shortcut per i bookmark di Firefox si impostano nel campo Keyword delle proprieta' del bookmark stesso. Ad esempio settando come keyword hronir per il bookmark a http://hronir.blogspot.com, bastera' digitare hronir nella barra degli indirizzi (Ctrl+L per raggiungerla direttamente con la tastiera, senza toccare il mouse). Ma il bello e' che potete far seguire alla vostra shortcut una qualsiasi stringa che Firefox sostituira' al codice %s che avrete inserito nel vostro bookmark!

Piu' facile da capire con un esempio.

Aggiungete il seguente indirizzo http://www.google.com/search?q=%s ai vostri bookmark, e settate per lui la keyword g. Fatto? Bene, ora potrete fare le vostre ricerche su google semplicemente digitando nella barra degli indirizzi la shortcut g, uno spazio e tutto quel che volete cercare. Ad esempio, digitando g hronir verrete portati direttamente all'indirizzo http://www.google.com/search?q=hronir.

Appena ho scoperto questo trucco, ho aggiungo le seguenti shortcut ai miei bookmark:

Scrivere spesso in inglese, ma soprattutto doversela cavare in francese, ora e' diventato, se non piu' facile, almeno piu' veloce!

Certo, se volete davvere essere dei geek, potreste anche costruirvi shortcut per bookmark che accettano piu' di un parametro. Ma in quel caso dovete giocare di javascript e, insomma, diventa un po' piu' complicato...

foXmarks!

I think I found the solution. Ok, not to the whole problem, but at least to the bookmarks issue. And the solution is another Firefox extension (add-on), and it is named Foxmarks.

Its features are much the same of Google Browser Sync (i.e. it's not a backup- but a sync-mechanism) and Bookmarks Online (i.e. it works)... together! No, it's even better, since, other than some additional features, I found it also solves my Sage to-be-read problem! And this is by far the more valuable feature for me! It solve the problem because, I found, Sage store the "visited" info into a crypted string inside the Description field of the bookmark properties: so, taking synchronized this string like Foxmarks do is all I need!

The other features (maybe you are more interested in) are the following.

The synchronization is (could be) automatic (i.e. periodic) in the background (you have not to remembr to sync when you think you will change PC). Moreover, the synchronization mechanism needs not to be logged on only once (like Google Browser Sync does instead). So you could make Foxmarks synchronize bookmarks for more than a computer in real time (or so...): as you can read from the FAQ, bookmark changes you make are typically made available to other computers within 5 minutes, and those changes are automatically synchronized into every other computer within 60 minutes, or sooner if you synchronize manually.

Foxmarks also lets you access your bookmarks from any computer anytime via my.foxmarks.com, so that you can even access your bookmarks from any internet cafe' or any friend's computer!

So, for me (and for the bookmarks issue only, alas...) this solve the problem of join together the ubiquity-feature of webapps, with the even-offline- and right-in-my-hands- features of local apps!

web- vs desktop- application

No, I'm not thinking about Google Docs & Spreadsheets or even web-OSs. I'm thinking about pretty simpler things such e-mails, bookmarks, notepads...

The problem is when you have/want to use two or more computers (exempli gratia desktop/laptop) and feel at home (sync!) with both of them.

Yes, gmail is fine, but what about offline e-mail reading? Making it available the IMAP protocol would be great. But it seems there are technical- or will-hurdles since it is the most requested feature for gmail and nevertheless there are no clues that it will be introduced... Actually it's now a long time since I start using gmail, but still I can not feel myself satisfied.

For scratch notes, I just started to use Google Notebook, but, again, there is the offline problem. So I think I will resort to some poor-man text-file scratches to be kept sync with Unison.

Concerning bookmarks, I tried Google Browser Sync (yes, always and ever Google...), but I'm unable to make it work correctly with bookmarks: it starts syncing but then it pipes up that I exploited too much traffic and then stop syncing (maybe I have too much bookmarks, grown day by day by means of a store'n'forget mechanism...). So I had to resort to specific tools such the Bookmarks online Firefox extension, but one has to remember to manually upload/download... and in the right time-order! In fact, if you forget to upload your changes from one PC just before going to use the other, you are going to be hoist with your own petard. And twice: you can not both enjoy the last changes (since they're not in the web-service database) nor upload new changes (otherwise, when you are supposed to download them on the first PC, you will lose the change made on that first PC). Thankfully, I mainly use desktop-PC during the week, at work, and laptop during w-e, at home, so it is supposed to be easy to remember of uploading/downloading at the right time...

Moreover, my bookmarks have an additional issue, since they also keep the feeds for my Sage rss reader (absolutely the best ever feed-reader, IMHO). When I switch to my laptop after a week on my PC and I check my feeds, mostly all of them will be shown as "to be read" even if I already read them on the PC. I was supposed to solve this problem with Google Browser Sync, since it can sync also the history of the browser. However, even if the single piece of news of each site is correctly recognized to be "visited", the site itself continues to be shown as "unread".

Yes, really a big mess. :(
